Quirky report on the Amsterdam Red Light District by documentary maker Roeland Kerbosch.

Around the Oudekerksplein, Roeland Kerbosch’s film about Amsterdam’s red-light district, starring the underworld figure Haring Arie, was to be a ‘socio-documentary event’. The director combined interviews and monologues by residents of the Red Light District with visual impressions of the neighborhood around the Oude Kerk, and refrained from making a moral judgment about the Red Light District and the lifestyle of its inhabitants. Pistolen Paul Wilking, Rinus Veth, Tatoepeet and ‘Pornohenkie’ Iprenburg were among the typical Amsterdam characters who guided the director through the red light district.

The film was released in the cinema in 1968 – after a difficult development period – quite successfully. The film press reacted divided: the director is said to have given an overly romanticized picture of the Red Light District. Kerbosch ignored all criticism; he had only stated ‘pure facts’.
